Organ

The organ in St Martin's Church arrived from the redundant

church of St. Erkenwald, Southend at the request of the then

Bishop of Chelmsford, the Rt. Revd. John Trillo.

With the help of the District Council and local industry the organ was

      brought to St Martin's.

The organ is the combined work of four organ builders over a period of

      one hundred and ten years.

The original organ was built in 1870 by  William Hill.

Brought to St Erkenwalds in 1906, it was extensively  rebuilt in 1956

      and enlarged.

In 1980 it was moved to St Martin's and rebuilt by Monk and Gunther.

The choir, great and swell organs are situated in the gallery at the

west end of the church, the pipe front was designed by Sir Walter Tapper.

The chancel organ is at the east end of the church above the console.

There are sixty-nine stops in the organ and over five thousand pipes.

It is known to be amongst the finest organs in the country and attracts

      many accomplished organists.
