St Martins of Tours

South Door

South Door              Our Lord above the door            Scented Gardens

Above the south door is a fibreglass figure of our Lord pierced by shafts of light, with his hands outstretched towards the town in service of the people.   It is an invitation of welcome to all to enter.

The figure was designed by Thomas Bayliss Huxley-Jones in 1968

The Porch and Figure were dedicated by Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Kent (Katharine of Windsor)  on 9th Octoer 1968

The south door looks onto St Martin's Square, especially designed by architect Douglas Galloway, containing scented gardens all at wheelchair height and apprecriated by those who are blind.

The fountains, arches and seats make for a pleasant place to rest and relax in the town centre
